I know what you're thinking. How could Gamemonger possibly find one game out of the stack of big releases this week?
Or 'How can Guitar Hero III not win?'
Well, guess what? Guitar Hero III isn't this week's game of the week. Nor do the Simpsons take the cake in The Simpsons Game, or even the return of Lego Star Wars. In fact, the winner of the game of the week ... is two games ... and two FPS games to boot.
So congratulations go to ... Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ... and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
The other games, and many more released this week, all had their share of entertainment and enjoyment, but for sheer class and overall brilliance, the fourth iteration of CoD and Samus' Prime finale share the spoils. It was simply too hard to split both titles, and not because I hate making decisions.
CoD: Modern Warfare pulls the best elements of the World War II based trilogy before it kicking and screaming into a (duh) modern setting, with all the bells and whistles you've come to expect from a top selling franchise. Visually stunning with a solid single player campaign and plenty of multiplayer options as always, CoD4 fills the gap of the realistic shooter in the wake of sci-fi epics Halo, Half Life and Gears of War. And a shout out to the crew at n-Space for the Nintendo DS iteration of the series. Nicely done, guys, but where's Wi-fi?
Metroid Prime 3 has been out for a few months now in the US and, as is customary for Nintendo Australia of late, it's finally come out just when the Nintendo Wii needed a big title to compete with the other big releases. But don't fret, Samus is more then enough competition for Master Chief, in fact in terms of a single player adventure, it's one of the best games out there. Corruption stands as a visual marvel for the family friendly console, and you can finally show your friends how good FPS titles work with the unique controls that maketh the Wii. It's supposed to be the last title in the Prime story arc, but I'd put my money on the bounty hunter returning in the not too distant future ... and perhaps in handheld form.
So it's a tie this week, but I do want to stress one thing. Guitar Hero rawks!!! More on that tomorrow, folks. For now, marvel in this weeks lineup ... while you can.
