WoW account security

How many players of WoW do you know that have had issues with the seccurity of their account? I know and talk to enough that have been hacked recently that I can longer count them on my fingers AND toes. I bring this up now because my password was recently changed without my knowledge or authorization. Now I know all about keyloggers and the like; however, in this instance it's different.
See years ago I was stupid and tried a powerleveling service. I was caught and my account was banned permanently. But just last week I received an email stating that my password had been changed on that banned account. Now the problem with this is I haven't tried to log into that account in over a year. I can't log into the account management site because it tells me the account is banned. So this begs the question of how someone else was able to even know the account name much less change the password.
It's apparent in that case that a keylogger was not used. So how was it accessed? This raises my concern about the security of the accounts on the end of Blizzard not just our personal computers. Blizzard of course now offers the Blizzard authenticator. Not a bad idea considering the security issues. I myself have purchased a few and am currently waiting for them to ship. I just wonder how much these will help if the lapse in account security is on Blizzard's end instead of mine.
