Spore is almost here!
August 31st 2008 13:21
Only four days to go until the release of Spore! Needless to say that the stockpile of towels and urine bottles are being prepared for Thursday's release date. All I can say is this: if EB do not have my pre-order copy ready...
In case you live under a gaming rock or have been playing World of Warcraft for the last few years (basically the same thing), Spore is the latest game from two legendary members of the gaming industry: Maxis, and its co-founder Will Wright.
Maxis is well known for being the creator of the "Sim" series of games, including the groundbreaking SimCity series, and the fun-to-this-day SimAnt. Of course after that came "The Sims", which recently sold its 100 millionth copy. It could therefore be assumed that EA is rather happy with its purchase of Maxis.
Then there's Will Wright. The creator of the games mentioned above. As Eurogamer.net stated recently in a hands-on with Spore:
Considering how much of Will Wright's focus throughout his gaming career has been in putting the creative tools in the hands of the players instead of developers, I would have to agree with the above. It also demonstrates Will's trust and belief in the value of his craft, and in the gaming community as a whole. Think about it. If you develop a game for seven-eight years, invent and re-invent whole aspects of the gaming experience, sink your blood, sweat and tears into realising your vision, and then say to gamers "This game is not just my vision, but it's yours too. Go and make it what you want it to be. Here are a bunch of tools which we have developed, but you will craft the experience for yourself." That is how I see Spore. Will Wright and Maxis have created a world for us to create a universe in.
Personally I would freak out. When you compare something like Spore to the heavily linear games such as the Call of Duty series (heavily based on scripted events), you can see the rationale of making games solely created by developers. They should know better, it's up to us to enjoy their vision as they have seen it. But Maxis have taken the complete opposite approach, and I think they are almost as excited as we are to see what happens when Spore hits the market.
*bounces* Only four more days.

Wright is a brilliant, articulate man and a compelling ambassador for the games industry: the ultimate geek with an unshakeable belief in the transformative potential of interactive entertainment.
