Guitar Hero vs Rock Band Round 2

November 10th 2007 23:59
Let's skip past the obvious 'Guitar Hero III is out now' news, and get down and dirty into the more important topics, as round 2 of this epic battle takes place...

Activision, from all accounts, have put together a worthy sequel in the franchise, and the good news is, there's even MORE room for improvement. While just about everything is as it was before, the addition of online play modes and 'boss battles' certainly adds some much needed spice to the franchise. And, of course, the wireless guitar works wonders.

So what's next? Downloadable content, of course. Here's where things get interesting. Already, two DLC packs have been released, which will hopefully be a sign of big things to come. Both packs feature three songs, much like the set up for Guitar Hero II on 360. That release didn't receive huge attention in that regard, but with a Velvet Revolver and Foo Fighters themed set of tracks out already, things are looking good.

Keep in mind, the content is for the 360 only, but PS3 and Wii owners shouldn't be waiting too long for similar content in the near future. The question is, whether the content will be console exclusive, or the same across the board. That will be interesting to follow.

And what of Rock Band? Well we know the DLC will be huge, and more varied. Instead of a handful of tracks per pack, we should be getting an entire album! A price point might be a little steeper, however, and there's no guarantee that each song on said album will be worth playing. But if the word 'Metallica' has anything to go by, it's gonna be big.

Call the DLC issue a mini war in itself. Whoever can increase market awareness online the most will receive the most plaudits. All the puzzle pieces are there to create an endless stream of entertainment, whether it be via guitar or an entire set piece of instruments.

And now, dear readers, onto the most interesting piece of info for this update. Apparently, Harmonix are already hard at work at a new game. The thing is, it won't follow the same design as Guitar Hero and Rock Band before it, and it won't be using input from plastic instruments. Essentially, the game will create music algorithmically, although I was never good at math, so how it works I have no idea. Which means next years Game Developers Conference in San Francisco should answer all my ... I mean, our ... questions, as senior designer Chris Foster will be leading a lecture on the games design.

For now, though, we've got one of the two titles on the open market. I'll keep you all informed on my progress in GHIII, and all the new DLC content that will (hopefully) make its way out over the coming months. And as the countdown to Rock Band continues, I'll take a closer look at what we can expect ... and whether Guitar Hero has found its true heir.

Game of the Week: November 5 - 9

November 8th 2007 11:30
I know what you're thinking. How could Gamemonger possibly find one game out of the stack of big releases this week?

Or 'How can Guitar Hero III not win?'

Well, guess what? Guitar Hero III isn't this week's game of the week. Nor do the Simpsons take the cake in The Simpsons Game, or even the return of Lego Star Wars. In fact, the winner of the game of the week ... is two games ... and two FPS games to boot.

So congratulations go to ... Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ... and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

The other games, and many more released this week, all had their share of entertainment and enjoyment, but for sheer class and overall brilliance, the fourth iteration of CoD and Samus' Prime finale share the spoils. It was simply too hard to split both titles, and not because I hate making decisions.

CoD: Modern Warfare pulls the best elements of the World War II based trilogy before it kicking and screaming into a (duh) modern setting, with all the bells and whistles you've come to expect from a top selling franchise. Visually stunning with a solid single player campaign and plenty of multiplayer options as always, CoD4 fills the gap of the realistic shooter in the wake of sci-fi epics Halo, Half Life and Gears of War. And a shout out to the crew at n-Space for the Nintendo DS iteration of the series. Nicely done, guys, but where's Wi-fi?

Metroid Prime 3 has been out for a few months now in the US and, as is customary for Nintendo Australia of late, it's finally come out just when the Nintendo Wii needed a big title to compete with the other big releases. But don't fret, Samus is more then enough competition for Master Chief, in fact in terms of a single player adventure, it's one of the best games out there. Corruption stands as a visual marvel for the family friendly console, and you can finally show your friends how good FPS titles work with the unique controls that maketh the Wii. It's supposed to be the last title in the Prime story arc, but I'd put my money on the bounty hunter returning in the not too distant future ... and perhaps in handheld form.

So it's a tie this week, but I do want to stress one thing. Guitar Hero rawks!!! More on that tomorrow, folks. For now, marvel in this weeks lineup ... while you can.

November has just begun and, taking a look at this weeks release, you'd be forgiven for thinking Christmas has come early this year ... come to think of it, Christmas came last month. I mean, who buys decorations in October?

So anyway, we've got Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, The Simpsons game on just about every format imaginable, Guitar Hero III (which I'll be taking a closer look at later this week), Big Brain Academy on Nintendo Wii, The Lego Star Wars is complete (another game I'll be looking into for sure), and Pro Evo returns for 2008. Hell, even Dirty Dancing is getting a release this week.

In all, every format has at least five or more titles coming out, with most of the games releasing on multiple formats, and you'd suggest that most of those games will be among the end of year awards too.

And just when you think it's all over, Assassin's Creed hits the streets next week, and just before the end of the month, Mario will make his long awaited return in what could be the biggest release of all, Super Mario Galaxy.

So I guess the next question is, is this the biggest year in games we've ever had? More on that story as the year comes to a close...

Guitar Hero vs Rock Band Round 1

October 29th 2007 10:32
It's arguably one of the more interesting up and coming contests in the gaming industry. Guitar Hero, now a long standing and successful music franchise entering a new age in more ways then one, and Rock Band, which aims to take everything learnt from the GH series and turn it upside down.
Over the coming months, between the release Guitar Hero III next week (woot!) and Rock Band early next year (not so woot, impatient as I am), I'm goning take a wonder through some of the more interesting aspects of this slowly brewing rivalry for gamers wallets, and to find out once and for all who is the true king of the plastic musical instrument wars...
