Gamemonger - January 2008

Microsoft Apologises to its Community

January 19th 2008 11:00
You know, for all the problems there may be in the gaming world, what with breaking consoles, dodgy games and bugs, it's always nice to see someone raise their hand and say 'yeah, that's our fault, sorry about that. Hey, have something on us.'

It's Microsoft's turn this week, and it's an Xbox Live arcade game on offer for free after the Christmas/New Years errors that slowed Live to a crawl in most areas of the world. And they haven't just thrown out a dodgy title no one wants either, since Undertow (the game in question) isn't a pushover. In fact, it's safe to say it's one of the best action titles on the system, period. It's a fair trade, especially since everyone will have a chance to download it ... well, as long as they don't already own the game. That's the only sticking point, but you can't please everyone

Smash Brothers Delayed Once More

January 16th 2008 08:03
Don't panic, this isn't turning into another Nukem, it's just a minor set back for what will be a powerhouse of a Wii title. Smash Brothers has been pushed back to March '08 in the US from its original February launch.

There's a catch within all this, however. There's still no confirmation of when we'll see the title down under. Unfortunately, this could mean a massive delay, something similar to the likes of Super Paper Mario or Metroid Prime 3 which were released many weeks to a few months after the US launch

Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur IV

January 15th 2008 07:34
You should all know this by now, especially if you're either a Star Wars geek like I am, or a Soul Calibur freak ... kinda like I am. Darth Vader and Yoda, those loveable old Masters of the Force, have been confirmed as playable characters for Namco Bandai's Soul Calibur IV.

The catch is simple enough, Vader only appears on the PS3 edition and Yoda on the Xbox 360 edition. But the rule could be broken thanks to downloadable content later on in the games lifespan, and the rumour is there may be more characters making an appearance later on. My guess is another Sith/Jedi character and perhaps Chewie. But please, don't take my word for it. The last thing I want to do is start a false rumour ... or do I ...

Duke Nukem 3D on 360?

January 15th 2008 07:23
Remember Duke Nukem? How could you forget, of course. Besides, it was just before Christmas when the long delayed Duke Nukem Forever came back from the dead. Not surprisingly, then, the original 1st person shooter Duke Nukem 3D is rumoured to be heading to Xbox Live, boasting co-op and multiplayer modes. I say 'not surprisingly' since, well let's be honest, if Doom can do it then Duke certainly can. It makes sense, and what better way to ramp up the hype again. No release dates or confirmations have been made, but an inevitable announcement should find its way out real soon.

Is it me, or am i saying 'surprisingly' a lot lately? Anyway, as for Duke Nukem Forever ... yes, same as usual, no info yet, but rest assured I won't be the first person to tell you if and when we all know the result, trust me on that.

New Details: Assassin's Creed DS

January 15th 2008 07:08
Talk about games coming out of nowhere. Assassin's Creed worked fairly well on Xbox 360 and PS3, but Altair's Chronicles is expected to take it further ... on the DS. What's even more surprising is the early screenshots on show at IGN, showing the handheld pushing out a full 3D environment. Okay, maybe not very surprising, the DS can handle 3D and fairly well too. The good news is, the team behind Band of Brothers DS is handling the title, so hopefully it will be in good hands. Release dates suggest February in the US. If that's true, expect the Australian/UK edition to hit stores (cross the fingers) around Easter.

The Year Ahead

January 13th 2008 08:01
Is it me, or is the year ahead not going to be as good as the year gone by? Smash Brothers Brawl will lead the charge, but a majority of the big name titles of 2008 so far doesn't seem to hold as big an interest as those of 07.

Having said that, there's plenty to still talk about. Besides Brawl, the other most anticipated title that (cross the fingers) won't be too much long to wait for is Spore, Will Wrights next big thing. Ever since watching Robin Williams play Spore nearly two years ago, this has been on my must play list

A good Sonic game?

January 13th 2008 06:25
So the blue hog hasn't had much luck of late. In fact, dating back to the Sega Saturn era of old, Sonic's only major success has come from a return to the series' roots on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. The move to 3D hasn't been as kind, especially when you consider how successful Mario has been during that same amount of time, even when Nintendo makes a mistake (I'm looking at you, Sunshine).

But here's something that might drag Sega's flagship mascot back into the spotlight ... and I'm not talking about Smash Brothers. Bioware, those loveable (now EA owned) RPG makers, are hard at work on Sonic Chronicles for the DS, and it's looking promising. I mean REALLY promising. Nevermind the talent behind it, any game that uses the DS to its full potential is something worth waiting for

Under the laws of gaming journalism, it's important that everyone releases a list of what they believe to be the best titles of the year. To ensure I don't get fined, here's the Gamemonger Best of '07 ... or as I like to call it, the 'My Wii Bowling score sucks' awards.
